Protecting the health and safety of overweight patients and preventing operator injuries

Understanding the problem.

OBESITY and Medical Emergency Care.

Overshadowed in the media by the Coronavirus pandemic, the issue of obesity has taken a back seat, at least in recent years. However, it remains a very important issue for those working in medical rescue, as, according to data reported by the ISS, it has reached dramatic proportions. In Europe, obesity is estimated to be associated with 1.2 million deaths per year. This problem is directly or indirectly linked to several diseases and represents a risk factor. What is particularly concerning is that obesity is connected to modern lifestyles and is a growing phenomenon; for this reason, its prevalence is expected to increase further.

The greatest risk? Being unprepared.

Patients with excess body weight immediately present clear risks for the crew assisting them. Body mass involves both the issue of physical effort, and therefore the potential risk of injury, as well as challenges related to the strength of the devices used and to proper restraint. Given the rapid expansion of this epidemiological trend in affluent societies, as seen in North America, it is essential to be prepared for a growing number of bariatric patients.

Proper Sizing

Some devices are simply too small for patients with high body mass. Examples include sphygmomanometer cuffs, as well as rescue sheets and, of course, stretcher platforms.

VERSATILITY

Certain devices should always be available in the ambulance and ready to be used when needed. Especially in emergency situations, it is difficult to predict whether a bariatric patient will need to be treated. For this reason, it is worth choosing versatile products that can adapt to any situation.
